Pelusa, Gastro Bar Buiksloterham, Amsterdam

Gastropub Pelusa
Amsterdam, Buiksloterham

Gastropub Pelusa
Amsterdam, Buiksloterham
Pelusa is the new addition to Buiksloterham: a brand new 'gastropub' on the Leen Jongewaardkade, with a striking appearance. Owners Steven and Ruud asked VASD for a modern, sleek design that still has a warm atmosphere. No Scandinavian design, it had to have something unique and intimate. A place where you like to sit as a guest, whether you come for one of the hundred special beers, or for an exquisite bite from the Argentine grill.

VASD formed the shell space around the central wall-to-wall bar. Behind it, the owners each live out their passion on one side. On the left Steven serves the parilla, on the right Ruud pours his special beers - or natural wine if you're more into that. The huge oak bar is one to sit at, so you can follow that spectacle. Behind the grill and counter, shiny deep green tiles set the tone. At night, they interact with the lights above the bar, a nod to the bright lights in Spanish cafes. But here, alternating shades of neon become atmospheric behind a semitransparent cove of corrugated sheet metal, which immediately reveals a glimpse of the impressive liquor supply.

A modern mosaic floor, reminiscent of an old drinking den, gives the space around the bar a soul. Several areas have been created here. You can have drinks with a large group at the high table to the right behind the entrance, where you won't be in anyone's way. A painted sky blue paneling distinguishes this area from the rest. Smaller parties can eat and drink quietly at tables at normal seating height by the window. Actually, those are French doors and a sliding door; everything can be opened as soon as the weather gets nice. They sit here facing south on the water; the terrace that opens in the spring catches sun until the evening.

To the left of the bar, the carefully designed toilets are another surprise, with a repeating pattern of vertical blue and white stripes on the wall: a nod by the architects to Pelusa's shirt, Maradonna's nickname.
